Sustainability-focused manufacturer to help bring Second Cut Project to life.
ASHEVILLE, NC—Diamond Brand Gear announces they will partner with Smartwool as the primary cut and sew facility for a new line of sustainable, sock-stuffed dog beds. These products, using 100% reclaimed materials, are part of SmartWool’s Second Cut Project, which focuses on building systems and experiments that will lead the company toward their goal of 100% circularity by 2030.
The program’s direction was informed by Smartwool finding that more than 97% of consumers1 are interested in recycling socks, “but don’t currently have the resources to be a part of the solution,” said Alicia Chin, senior manager of sustainability and social impact at Smartwool.
Diamond Brand Gear CEO, John Delaloye shares his passion for sustainability, adding “Positive steps forward like the Second Cut Project from Smartwool can’t happen without vision at the leadership level. It’s too easy to accept the status quo with textile waste, and there’s too much at stake to not make changes. I applaud Smartwool’s actions and challenge everyone in the industry to keep pushing the needle on this front.”
Diamond Brand Gear was chosen as a partner on this program because of their multiple, strategic initiatives focusing on reducing textile waste. In fact, the company has set their own goal of achieving zero fabric waste by 2022.
Delaloye and his team have already implemented circular systems to mitigate post-industrial and post-consumer waste into new products, as seen in their “American Boro” program. “We’re honored to be a part of this project,” said Diamond Brand COO Lauren Rash. “Creative reuse is something that we live and breathe here and it’s exciting to work with partners like SmartWool on a project of this scale that aligns with our own mission, strategy and values.”
Smartwool is also partnering with Material Return, a platform for custom circularity, on the Second Cut Project sock take back event.
Molly Hemstreet, Co-Executive Director at Material Return noted, “we also want to thank all our manufacturing partners who helped make it possible—especially the Carolina Textile District and Diamond Brand Gear. Through the Smartwool Second Cut Project sock take back event, we’re giving consumers an opportunity to support both environmental sustainability and innovative labor practices.”
